They are both inspired by the Newsboy Strike of 1899. Newsies the movie and the musical are both inspired by the strike. The musical has some different characters but is still similar to the movie. The main characters are Jack Kelly and David Jacobs, the fictional leaders of the Newsies.

1992 Walt Disney Studios released a movie based on the real-life events of the Newsboys’ Strike of 1899. The movie is a live action musical. Screenplay by Bob Tzudiker and Noni White and  score written by Alan Menken (Oscar winning composer) and lyricist Jack Feldman.

Because so many people wanted a stage version of Newsies, Disney Theatrical Group began working on a musical. They called back Alan Menken and Jack Feldman to work on a score for the musical and book writer Harvey Fierstein (Tony Award®- winning) was hired to work on making the movie to a musical. After a several year process it went on stage at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey were the musical received great reviews and the producers changed plans and announced a Broadway run. NEWSIES opened at the Nederlander Theatre on March 29, 2012 and still playing today.
